About the UK Universities
The Further and Higher Education Act of 1992, or the Higher Education and Research Act of 2017, or a royal charter, papal bull, parliamentary act, or other act of government, has typically been used to establish universities in the United Kingdom. Laws guarantee the right to grant degrees and the term “university,” while the specific procedures for doing so differ amongst the United Kingdom’s member states.
All universities, university colleges, colleges of the University of London, some higher education colleges, and the Archbishop of Canterbury is considered recognized entities because they have the authority to grant degrees. There are more than 300 institutions in the UK that provide degree programs that are verified by recognized organizations.
Degree-granting programs may also be offered by listed organizations, with degrees validated by a recognized body. In the UK, there are over 300 listed organizations offering more than 50,000 courses. The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service oversees undergraduate applications to nearly all UK universities (UCAS).
