About the University of Pretoria
The University of Pretoria is located in Pretoria, the administrative and de facto capital city of South Africa, it is a multi-campus public University that majors in research. The establishment of the University dates back to the 20th century, in the year 1908, it was established as the Pretoria campus of the Johannesburg-based Transvaal University College, as at the time of its establishment, it has 32 students but statistics carried out in the year 2019 put the number of the students of the institution at 53,000 approximately. Pretoria University has about seven suburban campuses sitting on 1,190 hectares of land. It is the fourth South African institution in continuous operation to wear a toga of university status.

It is worthy to note that the University of Pretoria Faculty of Veterinary Science established in the year 1920 is the second oldest Veterinary School in Africa and the only Veterinary School in South Africa. The University is always referred to as UP, Tuks, or Tukkies.
About Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program
The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program is a global initiative that has been running consistently for ten (10) years’ worth about $500 million, the program calls for any student who can transform the African continent to apply. The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program aims at educating and developing seasoned leaders who will contribute immensely and generously to the social, economic, and political transformation of the African continent in the nearest future. Because of the pressing need to lift most African countries out of poverty and also to make sure that a greater percentage of the African populace is educated, the prestigious University of Pretoria is in a partnership with the Mastercard Foundation (MCF) to offer scholarships at postgraduate level to deserving students from Africa interested in going into an academic voyage in the University of Pretoria.
The nature of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program (MCFSP) is that it offers full-time postgraduate study to students who have already completed Bachelor’s degrees and are citizens or residents of any country in Africa. The target of this program is students who are academically qualified to pursue their master’s degree program, it also targets students who are not economically buoyant to pursue their education, what it aims to achieve is that such African youngsters who are beneficiaries go back to their countries and give back to the society by helping in the development and transformation of their countries. It is pertinent to note here that applicants should just possess their Bachelor’s degrees as possession of a Master’s degree is a ground for the disqualification of an applicant.
An essential component of the program is community service and internships, the MCFSP offers a full scholarship to selected students who have been given provisional admissions to study at the University of Pretoria for a postgraduate degree.
Scholarship Worth (Benefits)
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Pretoria University is a fully-funded scholarship program. All the fees of the applicants will be taken care of by the program.
Application Deadline
An application to study at the University of Pretoria opens on March 1, 2022, and closes on August 30, 2022, the year which precedes the year of study, meaning that if a candidate wants to study at the University of Pretoria in the year 2023, the application starts on March 1, 2022, and ends on August 30, 2022.
Application Eligibility
To apply for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Pretoria, applicants must possess all of the following requirements:
- Applicants should be citizens of any of the countries in Africa.
- Applicants should be economically disadvantaged and demonstrate financial neediness.
- Candidates should develop leadership potential and must be able to give back to society.
- Applicants must be academically sound and must maintain academic excellence at every material time.
Provisional Courses
For an applicant to be qualified for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Pretoria, such an applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree from any of the following Faculties and must have been given provisional admission to pursue his/her Master’s Degree program in the University of Pretoria. The faculties are:
- Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences
- Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences
- Faculty of Humanities for entry into BPolSci (Political studies or International Studies only).
Note: Honours and Masters’s degree applications will be accepted in the fields of Engineering for only continuing students.
How To Apply
To apply for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, candidates should take the following steps.
- Apply online here. Alternatively, candidates can submit a hard copy of their application form. For more information on this, interested applicants should call +21(0)12 420 4297/6621 or send an email to mcfsp@up.ac.za for undergraduate or postgraduate inquiries.
- After the submission of the application, there will be an evaluation by the management of the relevant faculties. The faculty must inform applicants whether or not they have been admitted.
- Once the admission of a candidate has been secured, such a candidate should immediately contact mcfsp@up.ac.za to commence the process of applying for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program.
- A successful Mastercard Foundation Scholar should have a passport to enable them to apply for a visa promptly.
Note: The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is a scholarship that covers the full tuition fee of any beneficiary and any other incidental fees.
